Judge Cody Martin was born and raised in Grand Point, Louisiana. He graduated from Lutcher High School in St. James Parish in 2003, then attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a minor in Education, graduating Magna Cum Laude. In 2010, he received his Juris Doctorate, Cum Laude, from Southern University Law Center, where he graduated Top 5 in his class and was a senior member of the university’s Law Review.
After passing the bar exam, he began practicing law at offices in both Gonzales and Lutcher, Louisiana and has appeared on behalf of clients in numerous courts, both at the state and federal levels, throughout the State of Louisiana. Judge Martin maintained a diverse law practice, wherein he practiced in nearly all areas of law including criminal, family, real estate, successions, business and commercial, construction, civil rights, insurance, personal injury, oil and gas, contract, class action, bankruptcy, governmental, and taxation matters. He also served as both a Public Defender and an Assistant District Attorney for the 23rd Judicial District prior to assuming the bench.
He is a member of the 23rd Judicial District Bar Association (past President), the Fifth Circuit Judge’s Association (current Board Member), the Louisiana State Bar Association, the Louisiana District Judges Association, and the National Council for Juvenile and Family Court Judges. Judge Martin is also very involved in numerous community-based civic organizations, as well as volunteers his time to coach little league sports and to cook for various charitable events.
Judge Martin currently resides in Grand Point, Louisiana with his wife Kimberly and their five children. Judge Martin is an avid outdoorsman, and he and his family enjoy spending time both in swamps and marshes of South Louisiana and at their camp on Toledo Bend Reservoir.
